NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ESTATE AND VALUERS AWARD NIGHT.



Awards of excellence were recently given to deserving icons and huge contributors to the growth of the real estate sector in Nigeria.The award ceremony, held in Lagos on Tuesday 28th May 2013, was the 10th Biennial NIESV Lagos State Branch Honours’ Nite .
A former governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, and the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, were among eminent citizens given awards of excellence by the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Lagos State Branch, for their contributions to the development of the housing sector and the built environment in the country.

Jakande was remembered for his exemplary leadership in providing mass housing for the low income earners during his tenure as the governor of the state, while Ayinde was honoured for his efforts at reducing illegal and defective structures in the state.
Other individuals, who were honoured at the event, were former chairmen of NIESV at the branch, Mr. Akin Olawore; Mr. Joshua Ladenegan and Mr. Abiodun Oluwaluyi; and former president of the institution, Mr. Nweke Nwazurike.
The corporate awards went to Abbey Building Society Plc, Inspiration FM, Wemabod Estates, Real Estate Environment, Murhi International Television and the Nigerian Army Directorate of Post-Service Housing Development.
The Director-General, NIESV Learning Centre, Mr. William Odudu, who was the chairman of the occasion, said he was glad that the institution decided to give honour to those who recognised the importance of the profession to the society.
“There’s no recognition greater than that given to you by your own people and I am happy about the people that have been chosen as recipients of these awards,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Joshua Patunola-Ajayi, who represented the NIESV’s President, Mr. Emeka Eleh, congratulated the awardees and urged the institution to focus more on developing human capacity.
“Let us see how to develop human capacity in the practice of estate surveying and valuation. We have done well in other aspects as a branch, but we need to take capacity building more serious.”
We have to match up our achievement by training people and bringing the younger ones up to our level,” he said.
In his goodwill message, the President, Building Collapse Prevention Guild, Mr. Kunle Awobodu, said he was happy at the collective efforts of professionals in the built environment to improve the housing sector.
“The built environment reminds me of the uniqueness in teamwork. Gone are the days of professional segregation; now, there is synergy in the professions and it is working out for our common good,” he said.
A legal practitioner, Mr. Adeniyi Akintola, also called for collective efforts at combating the escalating prices of properties across the country
